To comment your first paragraph, I think the definition is a little bit… brief ;-)
A good definition has been provided by the Web Analytics Association:
“Web Analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of Internet data for the purposes of understanding and optimizing Web usage“.
You’re right, the fact that GA is free is probably part of its success but it is also a powerful tool with a lot of features to address many needs. Definitely a good solution if you want to achieve professional web analytics without paying an expensive tool.
