Searching for data mining contents
The Data Mining Search Engine is now active for about two months. More than 600 queries have been made during this period. At his time only 46 sites have been added. However, I will soon add other data mining websites. The main advantage of using such a customized search engine (instead of Google) is… Continue reading...

Top 10 data mining algorithms

Filed under: data mining algorithms, list of algorithms, top 10
Wow! What a title! It sounds good. One can first think that ranking completely different data mining algorithms is useless (since they have their own uses and applications). However, certain people (and not the leasts) have selected the most important algorithms in the field. These algorithms have been identified during the IEEE ICDM in 2006. This selection is the subject of a paper (1) that has appeared online in December… Continue reading... | 1 Comment

How do you learn data mining?
In data mining, as in many other fields, people come from a wide range of horizons. This is quite normal since data mining is an interdisciplinary field. People working in this area may come from machine learning (research), statistics, business intelligence or a related field in industry, etc. Today, I'm interested to know how you have learnt (and continue to learn) data mining. For that, you can answer the poll… Continue reading...Mining Personal Data
KDnuggets points to an interesting article, The Joys of Data-Mining, about personal data that may be useful for political purposes. Although the paper is quite short, it gives a good introduction of possible information you can get from a voter. Starting with these few lines, it is easy to imagine all useful information one can get from such data. I'm wondering if voters know that these kinds of databases… Continue reading...Data Mining Methodologies for Supporting Engineers during System Identification

After four years of work, I am now close to finishing my PhD. Below is the abstract of my thesis which is about data mining for system identification support: Data alone are worth almost nothing. While data collection is increasing exponentially worldwide, a clear distinction between retrieving data and obtaining knowledge has to be made. Data are retrieved while measuring phenomena or gathering facts. Knowledge refers to data patterns

What have you mined?
During the last five years, I have mined different types of data. For my master project, I mined pollen data in order to predict the pollen concentration for the following week. In my PhD, I mine engineering data. More precisely, I mine data in the case of diagnosis. Indeed, a structure can be in different… Continue reading... | 3 Comments
